INTERCESSORY PRAYER
MOVES GOD
E.M. Bounds
From his book "E.M. Bounds
On Prayer"
Intercessory prayer is a powerful means of grace for the praying man. The
English missionary Henry Martyn observed that at time of inward dryness and
depression, he often found a delightful revival in the act of praying for
others, for their conversion, their sanctification, or their prosperity in the
work of the Lord. His intercessions with God about these gifts and blessings
were, for him, the divinely natural channel of a renewed insight into his own
part and lot in Christ. Christ was his own rest and power, into the "perfect
freedom" of an entire yielding of himself to his Master for his work. By Handley
Moule.
Prayer
unites with God's purposes and lays itself out to secure those purposes. How
often would the wise and benign will of God fail in its rich and beneficent ends
by the sins of the people if prayer had not come in to arrest wrath and make the
promise sure! Israel as a nation would have met their just destruction after
their apostasy with the golden calf, had it not been for the unfainting
intercession of Moses' forty days and forty nights of prayer.
Moses'
character was greatly affected by his praying. His forty days of close
interaction in prayer with God worked a greater change in his character than did
his exchanges with God when he received the law. When he came down from the
mountain, after his long prayer, his face shown with dazzling brightness (Exodus
34:29-30). Our heights of transfiguration and loving character and conduct are
born of seasons of prayer. God has responded to all-night praying by changing
many a Jacob, a supplanter, into an Israel, a prince, who has power with God and
man.
No
mission was more majestic in purpose and results than that of Moses. None was
more responsible, diligent, or difficult. His mission teaches us the noble
ministry of prayer. Not only is prayer the medium of supply and support, but it
is a compassionate agency through which the pitying, long-suffering God has an
outflow. Prayer is a medium to restrain God's wrath, allowing mercy to rejoice
against judgment.
Moses
himself and his mission were the answer to prayer in I Samuel 2:8 the Bible
records, "When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the Lord,
then the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of
Egypt, and made them dwell in this place. "This was the beginning of the great
deliverance of the Hebrews from Egyptian bondage.
The
great movements of God originate with and are shaped by the prayers of men.
Prayer deals directly with God. He is pleased to order His policy and base His
actions on the prayers of His saints. Prayer influences God greatly. Moses could
not do God's great work, even though it was God-commissioned, without praying.
Moses could not govern God's people and carry out the divine plans without his
censer full of the incense of prayer. The work of God cannot be done unless the
fire and fragrance of prayer are always burning, ascending, and perfuming.
Moses
prayed often to relieve the terrible stroke of God's wrath. Four times Pharaoh
solicited the prayers of Moses for relief from the fearful blow of God's wrath.
"Entreat the Lord" (Exodus 8:8) begged Pharaoh while the loathsome frogs were
upon him. "And Moses cried unto the Lord because of the frogs which he had
brought against Pharaoh. And the Lord did according to the word of Moses"
(Exodus 8:12-13). God answered his prayers.
When the
grievous plague of flies had corrupted the whole land, Pharaoh again piteously
cried out to Moses, "Entreat for me" (Verse 28). Moses left Pharaoh and begged
the Lord, and again the Lord answered and did as Moses asked.
The
plague of fiery hail, which destroyed all of Egypt's crops, brought Pharaoh to
Moses with the same earnest appeal, "Entreat the Lord" (Exodus 9:28). Moses went
into the privacy of the wilderness alone with Almighty God. He "spread abroad
his hands unto the Lord, and the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not
poured upon the earth." (Verse 33).
Though
Moses was the man of law, prayer with him still asserted its mighty force. As in
the more spiritual dispensation Moses could have said, literally, "My house is
the house of prayer." (Luke 19:46). Moses accepted the foundation of praying at
its full face value.
Prayer
deals directly with God. With Abraham we saw this clearly and strongly
enunciated. With Moses it is still clearer and stronger, if that is possible.
The principle is this: Prayer affects God. God's conduct is influenced by
prayer. A continuation of this principle is that God hears and answers prayer,
even when the hearing and answering might change His conduct and reverse His
action. The decree, "Call unto Me, and I will answer thee" (Jeremiah 33:3), is
stronger than all other laws and more flexible than any other decree.
Moses
had bold, free, and unhindered access to God. Familiarity and closeness to God
gives delight, frequency, focus, and potency in prayer. Those who know God the
best are the riches and most powerful in obtaining answers to prayer. Prayer
becomes a rare thing for those unacquainted with God.
Moses
sometimes found himself reduced to extreme conditions that God decided not to
relieve. However, there are no circumstances too extreme for God to relieve.
Moses'
mission was divine. It was ordered, directed, and planned by God. The more there
is of God in a movement, the more prayer is conspicuous. Moses urgently prayed
for the salvation of the Lord's people for forty days and forty nights. His
concern was so intense for them that his physical infirmities and appetites were
taken away during long seasons of prayer.
Evidence
of the strange effect a righteous man's prayers have on God can be seen in God's
exclamation to Moses: "Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot
against presence of such an influence over God fills us with astonishment, awe,
and fear. How bold, lofty, and devoted is such a pleader!
Read
this from the divine record "And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh,
this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. Yet now,
if Thou will forgive their sin; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of Thy
book which Thou hast written. And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath
sinned against Me, him will I blot out of My book. Therefore, now go, lead the
people unto the place where I have spoken unto thee: behold mine angel shall go
before thee." (Exodus 32:31-34).
At the
rebellion of Korah, God's anger flamed out against everyone in Israel who
sympathized with the rebels. Again Moses appeared on the stage of action, and
this time Aaron joined him in intercession for these sinners. In a serious time
like this, Moses knew where to go for relief. He knew to pray that God would
answer by holding back His wrath to spare Israel is what Scripture says about
this situation.
"And the
Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, Saying, Separate yourselves from among
this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell on their
faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin,
and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?" (Numbers 16:20-23).
The
assumption, pride, and rebellion of Miriam, the sister of Moses, in which she
had the presence and sympathy of Aaron, put the praying and the spirit of Moses
in the noblest and most amiable light. Because of her sin, God smote her with
leprosy. But Moses made tender and earnest intercession for his sister who had
so grievously offended God. His prayer was answered, and God saved her from the
fearful and incurable malady. The record of this is very interesting:
"And the
anger of the Lord was kindled against them; and He departed. And the cloud
departed from off the tabernacle; and behold, Miriam became leprous, white as
snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam and behold she was leprous. And Aaron said
unto Moses, Alas, my Lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we
have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned. Let her not be as one dead, of
whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother's womb. And
Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech Thee. And the
Lord said unto Moses, if her father had but spit in her face, should she not be
ashamed seven days? Let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that
let her be received again. (Numbers 12:9-14).
The
murmuring of the children of Israel furnished conditions that called into play
the full force of prayer. These conditions impressively bring out the
intercessory feature of prayer and disclose Moses in his great office of an
intercessor. It was at Marah that the waters were bitter, and it was here that
the people grievously murmured against Moses and God. Here is the Scripture
account:
"And
when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they
were bitter; therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people murmured
against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? And he cried unto the Lord; and the
Lord showed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were
made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there He
proved them? (Exodus 15:23-25).
The
records of eternity alone will disclose how many bitter places of the earth have
been sweetened by answers to prayer.
Again at
Taberah, the people complained, and God became angry with them. Moses again came
to the front, stepped into the breach, and prayed for them. Here is the brief
account: "And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord; and the Lord
heard it; and His anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them,
and consumed them that were in the uttermost part of the camp. And the people
cried unto Moses; and Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was quenched."
(Numbers 11:1-2).
Moses
got what he asked for. His praying was specific, and God's answer was likewise
specific. Almighty God always heard and always answered Moses when he prayed.
Once, however, the answer was not specific. Moses had prayed to go into Canaan.
The answer came, but it was not what he asked for. He was given a vision of the
Promised Land, but he was not allowed to cross the Jordan into that land.
Moses'
prayer was a prayer on the order of Paul's, when he prayed three times for the
removal of the thorn in the flesh. In this case, the thorn was not removed, and,
like Moses, Paul did not get what he asked for. However, God did provide grace
that made the thorn a blessing.
The
Ninetieth Psalm, though it is incorporated with the Psalms of David, is
attributed to Moses. It gives us a sample of the prayers of God's lawgiver. It
is a prayer worth studying. It is sacred because it has been the blessing
uttered over our dead for years. However, its very familiarity may cause us to
lose its full meaning.
We would
be wise if we digested it, not for the dead, but for the living, and let it
teach us how to live, how to pray while living, and how to die. "So teach us to
number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom ... establish Thou the
work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish Thou it" (Psalm
90:12, 17).
*******************************************************************************
"Nothing
so pleases God in connection with our prayers as our praise, and nothing so
blesses the man who prays as the praise he offers to God. I got a great blessing
once in China in this connection. I had received bad and sad news from home, and
deep shadows had covered my soul. I prayed, but the darkness did not vanish. I
summoned myself to endure, but the darkness only deepened. Just then I went to
an island station and saw on the wall of the mission home these words:
"Try Thanksgiving." I did, and in a moment every shadow was gone, not to
return. Yet, the psalmist was right, "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the
Lord." Henry W. Frost.
"Satan
dreads nothing but prayer. The church that lost its Christ was full of good
works. Activities are multiplied that meditation may be ousted, and
organizations are increased that prayer may have no chance. Souls may be lost in
good works, as surely as in evil ways. The one concern of Satan is to keep the
saints from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, Prayerless work,
prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles
when we pray." Samuel Chadwick

MISSIONS IN ARMENIA AND ROMANIA
Bro. and Mrs. Asatur Nahapeytan and family -
Yerevan, Armenia -- God continues to bless His dedicated men who
are working to plant ten new churches in Yerevan, Armenia. We are now into our
third year of our Y10 PROJECT, the goal of which is to plant a new Baptist
congregation in each of the ten districts of the capitol city of Yerevan. We are
sending each missionary pastor $300 per month, which is used for salary and
ministry expenses (including rent for their meeting place). These ten men are,
of course, bi-vocational and are struggling to make a living for their families.
Pray that God will continue to burden our people to give for this project and
that He will bless these faithful servants. Pray also that soon we can raise the
money to help them purchase land to build on. Pray for God to bless Bro. Asatur
as he leads in this great ministry.
Bro. Dani Bagosi -- Oradea,
Romania -- Please pray for our VSM team
coming to Romania July 12-26. Pray for these students in the first week where
they will be able to minister to many of the families of our churches. Pray for
them as they prepare their lessons that God would lead them to the exact
passages the people there need to hear. We have a door opening for us to
minister to the Gypsies in Albania. Pray that God will give wisdom to a survey
team of our workers that will be going to Albania to hold evangelistic meetings.
We have discovered that there are over one-million gypsies in Albania that speak
the same gypsy dialect that our workers speak in Romania. As you pray, praise
God for the doors He continues to open and the hearts He continues to touch.

Tuesday,
May 6, 2008 -- BMAA MISSIONS IN THE MIDDLE EAST NATIONS
Bro. and Mrs. Charles Costa and family - Beirut, Lebanon --
God has been blessing us tremendously and so have challenges come. The political
uncertainty in Lebanon, the persecution in Jordan, the threats in Iraq have
forced us to work with "time" on our mind. We may not have much time in the
Middle East. In Iraq, there has been a concerted effort to displace the
Christians. Many western governments have been opening their doors to Iraqis. In
Lebanon, I was meeting with the second highest ranking Sunni Muslim cleric last
week and he shared with me that the Shiite plan (as it is in Iraq) is to vacate
Lebanon of its Christian population and crush the Sunnis. In other words, a
bleak picture anywhere you look until you see the faces of those coming to
Christ and the doors being opened for more ministries. Praise God, no one said
that ministry is a walk in the park, or that mission work is for the
fainthearted. Please Praise God for: (1) Many souls saved in our Sudan campaign
the last ten days of March; (2) Substantial growth in the work in Syria (Last
week in Damascus attendance was 125 -- no more room). Please pray for: (1)
Divine provision for a new place for worship in Damascus; (2) Safety for Bro.
Nabil Sara and the other workers in Baghdad; (3) Safety for our workers in
Jordan; (4) Potential work in Tunisia.
All BMAA sponsored foreign nationals in Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Iran,
Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Mauritania, and other Middle East Countries.
According to Bro. Costa things are at a very serious stage concerning the
safety of workers in Iraq at this time. At least one evangelical pastor had to
flee the country. Pray really in earnest that God will give divine
protection to the Sara Family
and other Christian leaders in Baghdad.
Wednesday, May 7, 2008 -- BMAA MISSIONS IN
UKRAINE AND OTHER CIS NATIONS
Bro. and Mrs. Jeff (Coleen) Franks and daughter,
Keivskaya, Ukraine --
Last month Bro. Jeff accompanied a delegation of Ukrainian
prison officials to see American prisons. Please pray that they will continue to
work with BMAA missionaries to bring Bible studies and Gospel preaching into the
prisons of Ukraine. Pray for Bro. Jeff as he prepares to teach CIS missionaries
and lead Bible conferences for the Iranian believers. The church in Nikolaevka,
Ukraine is asking Bro. Jeff to raise funding to lay the foundation for its first
church building. Pray for the selection and preparation of a new mission couple
to start a new church planting in the Ternopol oblast of Ukraine.
Bro. and Mrs. Andrey (Laura) Kanaykina and family - Urpin, Ukraine
Bro. and Mrs. Justin (Crystal) Owens and family - Kievskaya, Ukraine
Report from our Russian Coordinator - Dr. Fiodor Baraniuk --
Pray for the future development of all age Sunday school ministry in the CIS.
This is a very important ministry and we need to pray that the people in
CIS nations will catch the vision to further involve as many churches as
possible. Pray for the Lord to supply necessary financial help to train
teachers, Sunday school directors, and pastors how to start this ministry. We
now have all age Bible studies in Russia, Ukraine, Armenia and Kazakhstan.
Pray for our Bro. Alsanbek Friev,
our missionary in Beslan, who has been diagnosed with cancer in his back. Pray
that the Lord will intervene and give healing. He is a very important worker in
our ministry in North Osetain region of Russia. His ministry covers Beslan,
Gizel and Vladikavkaz. Together with Brothers Taymuraz and Aslan Balikoeve they
have developed a vision given from the Lord to reach North Osetia for Christ. It
will involve a lot of prayers and financial help from Christians in Russia as
well as in North America.
Pray for the work in the Middle Asia
nations: Kazakhstan, Kyrgzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. A newly
organized fellowship of these countries named Central Asia Coordinating Council
will be able to advance ministry in these nations. Their vision is to reach
native people of these nations that are more than 90% Islamic followers.
Pray for our missionary in
Uzbekistan, His nick name is Bro. Andrew (his real name cannot be used for
security reasons.) He lives at the border of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Once a
month he crosses a border and works among Turkmen in the Urgenich region
reaching these people for Christ. It is a very dangerous ministry since
Turkmenistan is a closed nation, ruled by the Islamic law.
Pray for the meeting May 9-10 in the
city of Osha in Kyrgystan. Missionaries from five nations (Kazakchstan,
Kyrgystand, Tajikisstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) will discuss how to reach
Tizbek people for Christ. We need your prayers that the Lord will provide His
blessed protection for all these brothers as they travel to the city of Osha.
There will be threats on their lives since this meeting will of necessity be
secretive.
Pray for our President and all elected and appointed officials
throughout our nation. Pray that they will seek the face of God, and be
open to His divine guidance and wisdom.
Pray for God to send a much needed revival across the USA. Our nation needs to
repent and seek the Lord.
Pray for
our Military forces serving our nation around the world and their families while
they are away.
Pray for your
pastor and staff members who serve your local church. Ask God to bless
them and anoint them with His Spirit as they lead and feed the flock over which
the Holy Spirit has called them.
Pray the Lord of the Harvest that He will
call forth more laborers into His harvest.
Pray for Bro. Phil Knott as he leads in a
training conference in Costa Rica.
Pray for the work days at Daniel Springs
Encampment and for all the volunteers who are helping get camp ready for camp
season.
Pray for the BMMI sponsored Medical team
ministering in Honduras today. (Optometry Clinic)
Pray for a Leadership Training Seminar being
held in Forney, Texas for Latin American workers.
Pray for Bro. Larry Barker as he ministers
in Fountain, Colorado with Bro. Jacob Norman and Ryan Fillinger.
Pray for the FAEROE ISLANDS where
39,703 people live who need to know Jesus Christ as personal Savior.
ASK OUR HEAVENLY FATHER IN HEAVEN TO
SUPPLY OUR DAILY BUDGETED NEEDS OF $15,280, AND THANK HIM FOR BMAA CHURCHES AND
INDIVIDUALS WHO GIVE REGULARLY TO HELP WITH THESE NEEDS.
GLEANER LIST: Pray for Mrs. Sue Kidd celebrating her birthday in
Bryant, Arkansas.

BMAA MISSIONS IN THE PHILIPPINES
Bro.
and Mrs. Wade (Joanna) Allen and family - Bacolod City --
Please pray for (1) We have just
completed our transfer to Bacolod City. We will be working with Bro. Doyle Moore
and the staff of BMA Publications to help develop more resources for ministry.
Pray for the transition issues we are facing in moving to a new city, new house,
new church and new friends. Pray for our marriage to stay strong in the times of
busyness. (2) Our ministry team in Legazpi City. Pray for God to open more doors
to start more Bible study groups, and that we will have wisdom to recognize the
opportunities God puts before us in the lives of our friends and neighbors; (3)
Bro. Elvin Granadil, as he seeks God's will concerning a possible relocation to
the Legazpi City area to start a new church planting ministry there; (4) Our
church in Matnog, Sorsogan, as they are facing many challenges at this time. The
pastor is discouraged because of these challenges. One of the large obstacles
they are facing is the loss of their church building after a typhoon blew the
structure away. Ask God to provide in this matter; (5) Our home schooling
efforts during this transition and that this move will not cause a lengthy
disruption of our children's studies. (6) The salvation of our son, Caleb; (7)
The churches of the BMA of the Philippines.
Bro. and Mrs. Doyle (Linda) Moore - Silay City, Negros Occidental --
Please pray for: (1) Bro. Doyle as
he travels throughout the Asia Pacific region. He has several trips in the near
future. Ask God for safety in travel, divine protection and for the doors of
opportunity to be open; (2) Our recent graduates from BMA Bible College. There
are 28 of them going throughout the Philippines, and as God give direction, into
other nations in the Asia-Pacific region. (3) Pray for one of our graduates who
is joining his family in Brunei as a tentmaker, where he plans to begin a
church; (4) Some of our students who will be spending time with Bro. Robert
Murphy and his family learning about planting house churches. Pray that they
will be willing to learn new methods to augment the older, so that by this means
more may be brought to Christ; (5) Pray for water (but not rain). The water pump
on one well is broken (they say the whole well is going to have to be
re-drilled), but the camp director was able to find someone who can "rework" it
for temporary use during camp. Please pray that the water pump does not wear out
during camps. Also, we have bathroom facilities for only about twenty people at
a time so they are always full. Please pray that these needs will be met! Pray
that the showers and toilets hold up, as well as the water pump!! After camp
each year, we have to do a lot of repairs and repainting. But it is well worth
it! Just having the young people in a situation where they are with a lot of
Christians, with all kinds of Christian events going on, and hearing the Gospel
several times a day, with no distractions to keep them from really thinking
about salvation and about a commitment to Christ. There are two camps: Youth
camp with 600 in attendance, and children's camp with 300 in attendance. Thank
God for those who were saved; (6) Two other camps, one of which is for the deaf.
Pray for a spiritual awakening and that many will be saved; (7) Pray for two
young Christians from Thailand who are studying at our Bible College that they
will be able to go back with a better focus on what needs to be done. Ask God to
provide their needs as well as help them spiritually, educationally, and
emotionally. They will be missing their families and friends, and they have
never travelled before, but are willing to give of their time and energy to come
and study this three months; (8) Pray that we will be able to add on to the
facilities to meet the needs of a growing student population, as the Lord sends
them. All of our facilities are overflowing! (9) Pray for a young man who was
severely injured at camp which resulted in the loss of three fingers that he
will be able to adjust to this major change.
Bro. and Mrs. Robert (Connie) Murphy and sons - Cebu --
Please pray for the pastors and
workers throughout the Cebuano speaking areas of the Philippines as they focus
their efforts on camps and retreats with their students and families during the
time of Filipino summer. Pray that God will continue to bless the efforts of our
churches and missions in the areas of evangelism, discipleship and leadership
development. We are seeing the fruits of this renewed focus and pray that God
will continue to broaden our vision for His work here. Pray for the ongoing
financial needs (land purchases, buildings, livelihood projects) of these
ministries to be met. Pray for my trip to Japan and Taiwan (May 8-19) that this
will be an encouraging time for all the national pastors and workers in these
two nations. Pray specifically for our Japanese national pastor Bro. Udonishi
